Teaching Philosophy

Each student is unique, and comes to music with their own goals and interests. Joel encourages curiosity and open discussion, combined with disciplined practice, to develop individualized approaches to study. Depending on student interest, and drawing from his broad base of knowledge, Joel's students have explored topics including:

  • Music history

  • Music theory

  • Development and mechanics of the horn

  • Early compositions for horn

  • New and unusual music

  • Extended playing techniques

With over eight years of experience, Joel Livsey has led clinics, masterclasses, and private lessons for brass players in concert and marching bands throughout Texas and New Mexico, as well as internationally via virtual coaching.

What Parents Are Saying

“Seems unbelievable but in a short 2 lessons, I can see a massive improvement in my son’s horn playing. Joel is a great teacher who is able to help students by making things fun and simple, and also giving them techniques to fix their problem. My son is very happy with what he has learnt and we will continue taking lessons with Joel.”

“Wonderful lesson. Mr. L was able to pick up right where my son needed help. He made some changes to the way he held the French horn and taught him how to use his air better. This was a life changing class! Thank you so much!”
